Scope & Sequence

Beginning in 1998, staff of the Nature Center have been meeting with Ashland teachers in a forum known as a Teacher Council. One of the original purposes of the Council was to decide what kinds of programs would be provided by the Nature Center. The programs needed to meet both the vision of the Nature Center and the goals of the Ashland School District. As a result of these meetings, the Scope & Sequence listed below was developed and is now being followed in the design and implementation of all field programs.

The Scope was developed, with the help of the Teacher Council, by reducing 60 possible topics (after rejecting Stonehenge and a few others) down to just six. All of the topics have a local focus, incorporate the other five topics to some degree, and include a stewardship component.

The Sequence breaks each of these six topics into four tiers, allowing students to be introduced to each topic in grades K - 3, and then, ideally, reintroduced to them at a higher level three times before completing high school.

AVAILABLE PROGRAMS:
K - 3 tier: The first tier of the sequence is introduced to students in the form of a field program at North Mountain Park, with accompanying pre-visit classroom activities — Ashland K - 5 Field Programs
3 - 5 tier: The second tier is also delivered to students as a field program at North Mountain Park with extended pre- and post-visit activities — Ashland K - 5 Field Programs
6 - 8 tier: Currently three (of the six) topics are being offered to middle school students in their classroom and outside on their campus; Water, Plants, and Native Americans — Ashland 6 - 8 Classroom and Field Programs
9-12 tier: A variety of programs are offered to Ashland High School students throughout the year. Two of the six topics are currently being offered to high school students in their classroom; Water and Native Americans — Ashland 9 - 12 Programs
