Service Learning 2008 Fall/Winter Program Selection

Programs begin September 30, 2008



Service Learning programs at North Mountain Park offer exciting opportunities for hands-on learning and environmental stewardship! Through these programs students and community service groups will learn about local ecosystems and complete a service project.


  • Water Quality in Bear Creek (grades 4 – 12)
    • Learning Component: Test water quality at Bear and Beach Creek, ponds.
    • Service Component: Students will help plant, weed or mulch areas near the ponds or bioswale at the park.

  • Invasive Plants: Weed'em and Eat'em (grades 3 – 8)
    • Learning Component: Meet some of our local invasive plant species and learn how and where they live, who eats them and some reasons to control them.
    • Service Component: Help to identify and control some invasive plants in Ashland parks.

  • People and Plants (grades 3 – 7)
    • Learning Component: Students will identify plants used by Native Americans of this region and explore some of their traditional uses with hands-on activities.

North Mountain Park will provide instruction and materials for one class or group at a time. We ask that teachers or leaders provide adult volunteers (one adult per eight students), transportation to and from the park, and name tags for each student.
