While visiting North Mountain Park, you might hear the raucous call of baby Great Blue Herons on a late spring morning, smell the pungent fragrance of culinary herbs after a summer rain or watch a Western Pond Turtle catching some of autumn's last warm sunshine. Whatever your interests are, in whatever season you first arrive, you'll want to return soon to make new discoveries.
From a renovated early 20th century farmhouse that serves as a Nature Center to
Demonstration Gardens to kid-friendly animal homes to self-guided interpretive trails, the park is a great place to spend the day!
The Natural Area features lush wetland ponds and stream corridor habitat for fish and wildlife and interpretive trails for walking, birding and enjoying nature. It also offers many opportunities for learning and stewardship, including an ethnobotanical trail, interpretive signs and Discovery Kits for outdoor exploration.
Discovery Kits are available for use at no cost and can be checked out Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 3:30 pm. The Kits offer outdoor learning and exploration at the park for children ages 6 - 11 accompanied by an adult, and are ideal for home-school classes! Each kit comes complete with storybooks and easy-to-follow guides so that adults will feel comfortable facilitating these interactive nature lessons.
This summer the Nature Center will be open on Saturdays from noon to 5pm. A docent will be on site from 1 - 4pm on alternate Saturdays to help families explore the park with North Mountain Park's Discovery Kits or to offer tours of the park. The docent will be available on the following dates: June 14 and 28; July 12 and 26; August 9 and 23.
